Three castles were built to defend Cyprus aganist Arab invasions back in the 10th century and the highest located of these is Buffavento castle. The historic ruins are an impressive sight and the surrounding nature makes this a very pretty place. Located more than 900 meter above sea level Buffavento Castle offers views of almost half of the island of Cyprus. Kyrenia, Nicosia, Famagusta and the Troodos Mountains can all be spotted from here and many people visit for both the views and the site’s historical importance. The trip to Buffavento Castle will not be dull as the beautiful landscape and views of the castle can be enjoyed throughout the journey, as well as the occassional mountain goat. A twenty minutes walk of rather steep steps lead you up to the castle and it is therefore a good idea to wear sport or hiking shoes.
