The Mevlevi Museum tells the story of the Mevlevi Order and Tekke in Nicosia which was an important cultural and religious place during the Ottoman era. The Mevlevi Order arose from the ideas of the well known mystical philosopher Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, and spread to many parts of the Islamic world. A visit to the museum today offers you glimpse of this world. Here you can experience the Dervish cell, which holds objects, musical instruments and costumes that belonged to the Dervish and visit the Semahane, where parts of the great poem Mesnevi by Rumi and reproductions of Ottoman miniatures and illustrations are on display. The museum is full of interesting facts and beautiful objects from this time. The Mevlani Museum is located within the walled city of Nicosia also served as a place where the poor could come for support, but also as an education centre of liberal arts for the more well off. On December 17th, the death day of Rumi, it is possible to experience a Dervish dance ceremony here.
