Othello Castle is one of Cyprus’s marvellous historical sites that tells the story of the island’s rich cultural heritage. The castle’s name might ring a bell for those familiar with the work of Shakespeare and it is believed that his classic play ’Othello’, set in a harbour in Cyprus, is named after this very castle in Famagusta. The castle’s four wide towers connected by corridors are a stunning site. Built in the 14th century to protect the city from invaders Othello Castle quickly become known as ’the impenetrable fortress’, a clear sign that it served its purpose. Made from stone that has seen many centuries the castle is truly a beautiful place, with elements of renaissance style. It is possible to visit the inside of the castle, where you can look at old cannonballs, and walk the corridors to get nice views of the surroundings.
